Organic foods, is the hype justified?

Personally, I wasn't fully on board with the organic food hype. Maybe that’s because I didn’t know much about what organic food actually is. The only thing I knew was that it’s supposed to be healthier and it’s a lot more expensive than conventional foods. But is it worth paying a little more? Is it in fact greener, healthier and more nutritious? And is it safer than conventional food, does it contain less pesticides or something? Well, here’s the answer.

Organically grown vegetables

The actual difference between organic and conventional foods is the way the products are grown and processed. Organic farming practices encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution. The farmers use alternative methods to fertilize and exterminate weeds, such as natural fertilizers, crop rotation or mulch. So, organic farming is a lot more environmental friendly than your conventional farming.

On the other hand, my idea of organic food being more nutritious sadly is wrong. But don’t let that stop you from buying it, because it still is healthier than conventional, as organic foods contain significantly fewer pesticide residues and don’t contain artificial preservatives, colorings, etc.

So, what’s not to love? Well, the only real downside to buying organic foods is its cost, due to the more expensive alternative farming practices. Another possible downside could be that they are less attractive-looking, because of their odd shapes and small sizes, but I think this only adds to their charm.

There you have it: organic foods are better for the environment and better for your health. The hype is justified and I’ll happily join in on it!
